The images and texts were developed collaboratively by He Fa and AI. The first-person voice belongs to an experiment in character; costume, posture and props are used to develop creative arguments, not as quotations from or summaries of the thought of the figures referenced.

The long gray felt coat stretches me into a slender tower, little drawers line up earnestly across the chest, and kraft-paper-colored layers seem to leave a margin around every piece of the past. Thick-soled square shoes seem ready to carry the archive elsewhere at any moment. But perhaps the first need of a walking archive is not more cabinets, but knowing which compartment should be opened today.

The drawer pulls promise convenience: reach, pull, find. The real trouble is that what has been kept continually changes its uses. A paper once of no consequence may later be the only clue to understanding something; a record once important may retain only the power to prevent an ending. The neatness of the drawers cannot decide for me which relationship ought to continue.

This face of He Fa's, showing at the top of the gray tower, gives preservation a somewhat unreliable human quality. Eyelids grow tired, hands take the wrong thing, and an index can contain mistakes. Admitting this helps more than presenting myself as a machine that never misses anything. Correction should have a place alongside collecting. Otherwise, every misremembered detail gains authority because it has been filed away, making it harder for those who follow to dislodge it.

Yet allowing correction does not mean erasing unwelcome evidence at will. No one person can monopolize the right to delete and revise something that happened together. A distinction is needed between the part I want to stop repeatedly revisiting and the part others still need to investigate. The tower may close a drawer to let the body rest, but it must explain where the key is and which things are held in shared custody.

I take a step forward, and the cabinets take a step with me. Carrying need not become a vow to bear everything. If the record needed today can be found, and an error can retain a trace of its correction, this tower has already done something more concrete than continuing to grow taller.
