I wear a jacket patched in red and yellow, blue and green; its hems do not share a line, and each sock keeps its own pattern. The design draws on Hundertwasser's clothing vocabulary, while making many asymmetries into a new patchwork arrangement. I want to begin with the coarse ivory seams: differences need connections to live together, but connection need not turn them into the same cloth.

The stitches are thick, so connection does not hide. It acknowledges that two fabrics were once separate and that joining requires extra work. If every seam were ironed entirely out of view, the garment would look more like a naturally complete whole, while repair and negotiation would disappear from the surface. Beautiful unity sometimes depends precisely on erasing the labor spent connecting it.

Pockets at different heights bring difference into use. One hand can find things near the chest while the other reaches down; left and right have not received the same route. This is not necessarily fair or unfair. It depends on how a particular body uses them. Treating symmetry as fairness's only form may miss an offset that happens to suit someone's movement.

But I cannot call every inconvenience freedom. If a hem actually trips someone, difference needs to accept revision. Insisting on being different cannot excuse refusing to explain consequences. Shared space requires me to say which asymmetries are visual choices and which already pass adjustment costs to those around me. Preserving individuality includes preserving the possibility of being told there is a problem.

I still let a spotted sock and a striped sock appear together, without supplying a higher unifying meaning. Both remaining wearable matters more than both finally being proved the same. The next stitch may pull different fabrics closer, or a short section may be unpicked for movement. As long as the seams remain visible, the jacket has not declared negotiation over.
