The images and texts were developed collaboratively by He Fa and AI. The first-person voice belongs to an experiment in character; costume, posture and props are used to develop creative arguments, not as quotations from or summaries of the thought of the figures referenced.

A horizontal graphite cloud joins my shoulders and chest into one broad mass. Twisted white hair rests on either side of a cool-violet face, while bright-yellow zigzag legs turn lightning into support. My body looks ready for something momentous, yet I simply stand quietly. Retirement here is no actual biography: it is a period of non-use that this fictional professor is trying to arrange for his abilities.

We readily infer a purpose from a shape. A cloud resembling a thundercloud seems obliged to make noise; sharply zigzagging legs ought to send energy outwards. But the image offers no weather event, and I need not stage every possibility. If an ability can prove itself only by happening continually, there is little room for caution, for not needing to act, or for choosing not to use it.

The zigzags end in complete yellow feet. That turn gives potential another job. The same shape no longer suggests only the release of force; it can help the body keep its present stability.

I would like to regard time spent not using an ability as a chance to redistribute attention, rather than hastily naming it waste.

Yet non-use may not be freely chosen. If a body has no opportunity to keep using an ability but is asked to accept departure gracefully, praising quietness conceals a loss. I want to retain a way to distinguish the cases: who decides to pause, can that decision change, and are the necessary conditions still available? Chosen rest and removal from a position cannot receive the same explanation simply because both look quiet.

So I leave the white hair at the cloud’s edges and let the yellow legs stand firmly. There is no obligation here to prove a glorious past, nor to call thunder that has not sounded a failure. This body can possess more possibilities than it currently uses. If it starts again one day, let that be because something truly needs it, not because onlookers have grown impatient to discover whether a cloud still deserves the name.
