The public GIF edition from 2016 begins with the names Yan Qin, Liu Yang, Aoshuang and He Fa, then combines image loops, narrative fragments and arrangements of characters. In his signed 2022 retrospective, He Fa identifies it as P4’s first theatre production and traces the importance of time-limited improvisation to this experiment. The two documents preserve its contemporary form and the artist’s later account of its place in P4’s history. The text moves through Venice, a missing person, an encounter with a stranger and returning sounds. Questions, instructions and actions recur. In small animated images, theatrical material becomes a set of fragments that can be revisited and looped. This archive reads “counterpoint” as a relation between juxtaposed voices and images; that reading is editorial. ## Source excerpt · 2016 “Did you hear it? / What kind of sound was it?” Questions about hearing alternate with the repeated “Was it really her?” Recognition, testimony and uncertainty continue to propel the published narrative. ## Camera positions and sound files The Shadow Counterpoint working archive retains short clips from several camera positions alongside segmented camera recordings. In the sampled 9.28-second clip “FY7A0351.MOV”, the view moves from a warmly lit wall toward stairs and an upper level, bringing figures, railings and walls into the same field. “MVI_0207.MOV” holds another tilted view of the warm light. The sound archive retains files with different names and durations: “STE-018.wav” at 23.169 seconds, “幕间语音2.aif” at 5 minutes, 0.590 seconds, and “影子对位法.mp3” at 5 minutes, 15.664 seconds. Their formats and durations have been read; their content has not been transcribed, so descriptions of their function remain limited to what the original filenames support. Source documents: FY7A0351.MOV; MVI_0207.MOV; STE-018.wav; 幕间语音2.aif; 影子对位法.mp3. ## Collaborative roles recorded in the manuscripts The retained opening report credits He Fa and Aoshuang with planning, Yan Qin with direction, and Liu Yang as a dancer. In a first-person account attributed to Yan Qin in the project press manuscript, her existing video and music provide the work’s framework; Liu Yang brings butoh experience to improvisation; and Aoshuang and He Fa contribute jointly to costume, visual design and lighting. These specific roles are retained without equating a P4 production with sole authorship by He Fa. The published GIF edition uses 刘洋, while the retained report contains both 刘杨 and 刘洋. These Chinese variants of Liu Yang’s name remain unresolved. Archival document supplement. CLOSE READING / 2026 CURATORIAL INTERPRETATION ## Shadow Counterpoint Once a live event loops, does its viewer follow the same time? ### Begin with what happens in the work The GIF edition published on 12 June 2016 names the collaborators together and combines moving loops, story fragments and typographic arrangement. He Fa’s 2022 recollection identifies it as P4’s first theatrical production; that is a later historical account. Questions of disappearance, encounter and recognition recur in the text, while GIFs repeatedly return actions within their own small loops. The one-time duration of the stage is broken apart. A viewer can stay with an action for a second or third occurrence, or encounter several fragments running together on a page. This is more than an abbreviated record of a performance: it is a public form that rearranges waiting, expectation and recognition. A theatre work can thus have two irreducible histories of viewing: live witnesses experience an unfolding sequence, while later readers choose how long to stay among loops and words. A site should retain the loops, their scale and their relation to adjacent text, then offer longer recordings as another kind of evidence. Combining everything into a single best edit may be concise, but it would erase the differences of medium and the positions collaborators left through different materials. ### The limits of this reading The original duration and complete performance structure require further verification; GIFs are not substitutes for the entire event. Based on the 2016 GIF edition and He Fa’s published 2022 recollection, with live files treated as another class of record.
