On the left, small light and dark units resembling triangles and diamonds repeat in a grid, holding tiny recognizable fragments. On the right, soft grey-brown superimpositions show almost none of the same sharply divided structure. Their edges, tonal contrasts and degrees of legibility differ markedly. The portfolio provides no separate subtitle for either image and does not describe them as successive stages. Both are therefore retained in their original relationship of adjacency, allowing their visible differences to lead the reading.
