A propositionAttending to another person's difficulty requires specific discernment; one's own suffering cannot substitute for the help they actually need.
The soft round hat and long dark cloak gather the body into a quiet outline; the collar lies close to the neck, while the broad hem conceals many details. Weil's outfit on He Fa has little ornament. I begin from this reduction to imagine a question: if someone is willing to take up less, do they already know how to help others?
Taking less can sometimes make real room. Speak a little less so another person can finish; use a little less and give something to whoever needs it more. Such actions can work, but the giver alone does not determine the measure of need. The other person may need a ticket while I offer lengthy consolation, or a clear explanation while I share their sadness to prove my commitment. Good intentions then occupy the attention that should have been discerning the need.
This broad-cheeked face showing above the cloak keeps simplicity from automatically becoming holiness. Having no splendid clothes does not prove that I understand suffering better; a willingness to endure may merely avoid the difficulty of asking for help. I want the character to practice something less readily praised: ask whether the help is useful, and accept the answer that it is not needed.
But asking cannot transfer all the work of judgment back to the person in the greatest difficulty. Sometimes they have no strength to explain; sometimes immediate action is needed. In those cases, begin with a small, reversible act based on what is known, keep checking, then adjust gradually. Specific attention is neither a performance of self-sacrifice nor a matter of waiting for perfect agreement at every step to absolve oneself of responsibility.
The cloak remains broad and can keep out the wind, but cannot wrap two people's circumstances into the same condition. I am willing to leave my hands free at its edges so that help can be taken, or returned. The final meaning of taking up less must be answered by whether the other side has actually gained a little more room.
