A propositionIncomplete clues can prompt conjecture, but conjecture should keep a route back to the material for renewed examination.
A dark jacket frames a pale shirt, with a relatively broad tie appearing between them. The first thing this Benjamin outfit gives me is a fragment easily continued in imagination: see the knot, and the eyes supply the length below; recognize the name, and memory supplies the face with many things not yet present here.
Filling in gaps is a skill of living. We cannot wait for every detail before making a judgment. Light through a door crack can be enough to suggest someone is still there; a few lines can point toward a record worth seeking. Yet the smoother the completion, the easier it is to mistake conjecture for something seen firsthand. Once a fragment carries too many conclusions, it struggles to admit different material that appears later.
He Fa's face breaks this chain of completion once. Familiar clothes have not brought the corresponding historical figure; the round nose and sparse beard keep me within a present act of role-playing. Such a break need not lose meaning. It can remind me to distinguish borrowed clues of recognition from a new interpretation taking shape. The clothes have an origin, but the sentences here must still answer to this moment.
Of course, caution that refuses every association would turn materials into unusable fragments. Better to mark levels within conjecture: what has actually been seen, what is only provisionally imagined, and what new clue would be enough to change my account. Imagination then has room to unfold while the material retains the ability to contradict it, rather than being permanently requisitioned by a beautiful story.
I let the tie continue to appear between the sides of the shirt, without requiring it to account for a whole person at once. What lies farther down can be sought, or remain unknown for now. What needs preserving also includes where I just stopped and where I began adding my own colors to the blank.
