A propositionThe distribution of time also appears as occupation of space; extending a wait requires explaining who maintains its conditions.
A soft vermilion-orange ring lies horizontally below my chin, while a navy-blue long garment drops straight through its center, with three orange-red buttons like another, much smaller sequence. The ring gives no reading, and I cannot use it to tell the time. It merely dresses the body in the name of a chronologist, turning waiting from a hard-to-see process into an enormous lateral volume. I am willing to imagine a period of waiting inside this ring. Someone can lean into it and decide slowly, while those nearby must go around it and continue providing space and quiet. Waiting is then more than the minutes each person owns; it has conditions to maintain. Who holds the seat, who postpones the next task, who changes course to accommodate someone else's unfinished business?
Soft cloth makes this occupation seem friendly, even caring. Yet softness does not automatically remove costs. The larger the ring, the farther its surrounding edges extend for coordination. If I think my delay has no effect on others because it does not feel sharp, I am substituting the material's gentleness for an examination of relations.
Conversely, demanding that waiting always deliver an immediate result would remove the chance for slow judgment. Some decisions really do need a sufficiently broad place to linger. I want to preserve it while letting its extent be explained and renegotiated: roughly what conditions are being awaited, who may leave first, and when to acknowledge that further extension will no longer add understanding.
I let the ring stay horizontal and the full face remain exposed above it. It can accompany me in temporarily withholding an answer, but cannot encircle other people's time on my behalf. The three small buttons can still be undone one by one to make movement in the long garment easier. Once waiting no longer needs so much room, I should be willing to shrink the soft ring, without mistaking relinquished space for abandoned thought.
