What Preserves the Gaps?

Broad white cloth bands interweave, while a green inner layer makes every opening conditional.

A propositionOpenness requires maintained edges and supporting structures; the number of holes alone cannot determine whether entry is allowed.

Broad padded white bands cross vertically and horizontally, forming an enormous square grid outside the body, with an acid-lemon-green inner layer showing through the holes. A small, short-haired head sits above, while black trousers and blue buckle shoes retain an ordinary scale of movement. The gaps are easiest to praise, but I want to look more closely at the cloth bands that support them: how must they connect to keep openness from collapsing into a heap?

The holes seem to reveal the inside, but this does not mean one can pass through them. The body still has a complete inner garment, and the arms emerge from other openings. Seeing, approaching and entering are different relations. A surface ceasing to be closed does not grant every permission at once. Only when openness has a specific object can it avoid becoming an unlimited demand on others.

Soft cloth makes these boundaries less sharp, but still needs to maintain tension. If one part loosens, nearby squares change shape too. From this I am willing to understand shared space: leaving a place open for approach is not a one-time act of goodwill. It needs continued arranging and mending, and someone to notice when an edge already makes passage hard for a particular person.

Overemphasizing maintenance may add so many conditions to openness that every gap must await inspection before use. I do not want structure to become a reason for endlessly postponing approach. Part can open first, with its capacity made clear, then adjust through actual use, rather than waiting for an absolutely stable system before acknowledging someone's need to come closer.

I let green keep appearing between the white squares, neither exposing everything inside nor filling the grid in again. Both hands can emerge freely, showing that the body still has routes that do not pass through all the holes. Perhaps openness begins here: telling you clearly where you can approach, while carefully preserving the conditions that let that place remain approachable next time.
