A propositionA detail's visibility can change a subject's proportions; attending to detail must also prevent it from swallowing the whole.
A blue-and-yellow turban wraps the large head, its yellow tail hanging behind the shoulder, while a single white pearl nearly rivals the ear for volume. The body is reduced to a mustard-yellow top, blue trousers and little shoes. He Fa turns to look back, the face occupying most of the character. Girl with a Pearl Earring is reinterpreted here through an adult body; the smallest ornament becomes an impossible-to-ignore relation.
A viewer may remember the whole face through a pearl, or skip the face while searching only for the pearl. I do not oppose details attracting attention; many approaches begin with a point of light. But when that light is treated as the entire subject, precise looking becomes another reduction. A name tells us what to seek while possibly depriving unnamed parts of a place.
The backward glance keeps a direction of response without offering a full answer. A large head and small body make me ask who distributes the proportions of looking: do eyes, earring, clothes and action each receive appropriate space? The earring's apparent weight is only an image effect; I cannot invent real discomfort from it. What can be said is that enlargement makes an ornament previously deemed trivial begin to demand explanation.
I keep He Fa's low eyelids within the backward glance, without rushing to supply a secret for this familiar beauty. The pearl stays bright, and the little shoes are still there. If the gaze travels down a little from the ear, it will find that a character introduced through one detail still has a body that should not serve only that detail. One reflection beside an ear should not make the entire body a supporting backdrop.
