HE FA ON XXX / CHARACTER WRITING

He Fa on The Milkmaid

The Milkmaid's Earthenware-Jug Apron

What Kind of Steadiness Does Flow Need?

The earthenware jug is small, while the action and body that maintain it are enlarged.

A propositionThe labor of care deserves visibility, but praise for steadiness should not require its worker never to stop.

A white linen cap, mustard-yellow top and dark-blue apron make The Milkmaid clearly recognizable. Both hands control an earthenware jug, a fine white stream falling into a bowl on the table, while the belly becomes an enormous blue-glazed vessel. He Fa's face is calm. The whole body seems to wear the work of holding, making the everyday action excessive and solemn.

A stream looks simple, yet needs coordination among spout, gesture and container. I am willing to attend to that coordination, rather than only praise the warmth of its result. Actions that keep life continuous are often treated as natural because they repeat, as though a bowl of something always appears when needed. Only when the character's belly itself becomes a vessel does the labor supporting continuity acquire a volume that cannot be bypassed.

But being seen may bring a new burden. If praising someone as always steady means expecting them to remain steady forever, praise fixes labor back into character. My cool face cannot prove an endless supply of composure, nor is the blue-glazed shell an actual inexhaustible reservoir. Care needs time for handing over and limits that can be admitted if it is to continue, not a more beautiful pose of devotion.

Bread is still on the table, and the jug remains tilted toward the bowl. I hope the gaze pauses on this fine stream, seeing how it is maintained while leaving a normal place for pouring to stop. Taking a form of labor seriously should include allowing its worker sometimes to set the jug down, without immediately mistaking that moment for a lack of care.
