A propositionWelcome must connect with actual conditions of accommodation; clearing an entrance does not already provide a place for those arriving.
An indigo inverted-U doorframe forms my body. The face sits to one side on the upper post, grey background shows completely through the centre, and two pale-blue column feet stand apart below. I seem to have made myself into an entrance. But being called the Empty-Vestibule Philosopher does not guarantee that a visitor has somewhere to stay. Between being open and being able to accommodate lies a stretch of work still to arrange.
An entrance easily creates the impression of an accomplished welcome. With no obstruction, anyone seems able to pass. Since I have not occupied the whole space, it seems prepared for others. But what happens after crossing? Can a visitor sit down, express a different need or turn back if the place is unsuitable? A central blank does not make these conditions arise naturally.
The face is not at the centre of the doorway, giving me a sideways position from which to observe. I would let this reduce the obstruction to people passing through, while guarding against another convenience: staying at the side to watch while leaving visitors all the work of finding their way. Truly yielding a place requires more than moving the body aside. It includes explaining where someone can go and which restrictions remain.
Too much arrangement can also turn invitation into control. If every visitor’s pauses, directions and statements are preset, even a considerate space may leave no room for the unexpected. I want preparation to supply necessary conditions without writing the encounter’s content in advance. That is where the blank matters: it needs supports, but should retain possibilities not yet occupied by a use.
I keep the two column feet steady, without rushing to fill the centre with new decoration. Someone may pass through, or it may remain empty for now. If someone does wish to stay, the next task is more specific than keeping the opening clear: hear what sort of place they need, and acknowledge that this welcoming shape may have to adjust for them.
