Pink-and-White Art Director in Giant Trousers

After the Budget Goes into the Waistband

Two soft mint-green barrels hold too much volume, while a small face must still make concrete choices about this expansion.

A propositionAbundant resources have value only when they become room that can be allocated; scale itself does not remove the need for choices.

The mint-green waistband rises to the chest, each trouser leg like a soft barrel, while a cropped magenta cardigan covers only a little of the upper body. My face looks small, and the burgundy hat resembles a temporary place for a signature. If this body were a budget, its largest allocation has clearly gone to the trousers; everything else can only rearrange itself around them.

Enormous capacity readily reassures, as though ample resources were ready before a problem even appeared. But spare room fixed in a place from which it cannot be transferred may not meet an actual need. However wide the trouser legs, they cannot automatically relieve pressure from taut braces. Scale becomes room to maneuver through allocation; a total alone cannot prove generosity.

The lower half of the thin black tie is tucked into the high waistband, making a line that should have hung down disappear midway. I see this as a small cancellation: one part gives up its full length to accommodate another. Such concessions deserve recording; otherwise, in the end we see only the grand central form, without seeing how many local retreats enabled it to occupy the center.

Shrinking the trousers would not solve every problem either. Some exaggerations are precisely what make the look work; restoring balance too early would pare its risk down to the everyday.

I am willing to accept temporary imbalance, but ask it to have benefits that can be examined: what exactly does this volume make possible, and which movements now require more help? Boldness can have costs; those costs should not be dismissed as insufficiently bold.

So I first examine whether the braces are easy to loosen and tighten, then decide how much farther to raise the waistband. The enormous red shoes must find a real place on the ground, and the little face must be able to see the next step from above. In this fictional body, a director's judgment may be one concrete form of labor: persuading the area with the most cloth to yield a little to the area that actually needs to move.
