HE FA ON XXX / CHARACTER WRITING

He Fa on Napoleon

Napoleon's Pocket Question

The Uniform Has Not Answered for Me

The hat occupies half the image first, while an open palm still awaits a reason.

A propositionThe form of authority can organize attention, but cannot remove the need to justify particular decisions.

A black bicorne stretches far sideways, and golden epaulettes broaden the little body too. A dark-green dress coat accompanies an ivory waistcoat; the right hand rests inside the coat, while the left palm opens outward. When Napoleon's classic pose meets He Fa's round face, majesty acquires a little puzzlement: such a complete uniform seems not to have prepared the character's next sentence.

Hat and epaulettes allocate looking first: the gaze identifies who commands before it hears reasons. I do not deny that form can reduce the costs of cooperation; clearly identifying someone responsible can be useful. But recognizing that person and establishing the soundness of their judgment are different procedures. Our need for someone to decide cannot justify assuming that an outfit makes the decision inherently better.

The hand inside the coat maintains the familiar image, while the open left hand seems to leave a gap for questions. I am willing to let the gestures restrain each other: one keeps the role, the other admits people beyond it still require a response. If everything unexpected is explained as others' disobedience, the uniform filters feedback until only agreement remains.

The ratio of short legs to large hat makes authority look like something that needs carrying, rather than an infinitely expanding body. I do not want to invalidate it through comedy alone; I would rather examine power within limited capacities. Who bears the consequences, when a change is possible and who can point out inadequate information are all closer than brim length to whether a decision is responsible.

The left palm stays empty, and the black boots stand firmly. Let me wear this uniform for now, but please do not complete the reasons I have yet to give merely because the epaulettes are so tidy.
