HE FA ON XXX / CHARACTER WRITING

He Fa on the Needle-Thin Tall Figure

Needle-Thin Tall Existentialist

Stretching Hesitation Too Far

An ankle-length black coat gives waiting a shape, but may also wrap a delayed decision too beautifully.

A propositionDelay can protect judgment, but its length must be tested alongside the discernment it adds.

The black coat falls all the way to the ankles, its buttons as low as a predicate that has yet to arrive. My body has been stretched into a fine needle, but the broad face has not narrowed with it. This mismatch matters: the everyday hesitation on the face remains suspended above an extremely elongated outline, refusing to let the coat automatically explain it as profundity.

Long lines tempt the gaze downward: from high collar to lapels, low buttons to trouser seams, then pointed shoes. Even a small movement seems required to cross a great distance. I imagine a method of judgment from this: every additional wait should yield a more accurate distinction. Otherwise, thought merely grows longer while its content stands still.

With no book or cigarette, I cannot use a familiar prop to prove a kind of mental labor. The hands must bear the awkwardness of being empty.

Empty hands make delay look vulnerable, but also honest. I have nothing to give you for now beyond an unfinished judgment and a seriousness that the coat's length cannot guarantee.

Immediate action is not always better than waiting. A mistaken decision can turn a long period into repair work, and I have reason to ask for a pause. Yet the person at the other end of waiting may not have the same margin. When my composure makes someone miss a bus, hesitation changes from a personal rhythm into a cost passed on. The long legs in the image will not hurry on their behalf.

I therefore leave the coat long, but keep a checkpoint between its two low buttons: which error has this time ruled out? If I cannot answer, I should admit that I may simply be delaying. Letting the broad face remain a little confused is at least more fitting than calling every failure to set out a distant journey beyond others' understanding.
