HE FA ON XXX / CHARACTER WRITING

He Fa on the Earl of Tinned Peas

the Earl of Tinned Peas

Preserving until when

An open lid makes preservation cease to be a virtue that can be extended indefinitely.

A propositionThe value of keeping something depends on its future use and requires a moment when preservation can end.

A silver can forms my broad belly, with green peas crowded inside like oversized soft balls. The lid lifts behind me, while a short cream formal jacket and long mint-green legs maintain an earl’s decorum. Half my body displays preservation; the other half is already opened, as though solemn manners cannot reseal time.

A tin retains what would otherwise disperse, and I acknowledge the value of that postponement. But I do not want preservation itself to become an eternally correct aim. If something cannot be used, redistributed or released merely because it has been kept for a long time, it changes from a resource for the future into a reason to sustain an earlier decision.

The peas are large enough to count, weakening the illusion of endless stocks. A solemn silver shell does not make them multiply, and opening need not mean immediate waste. What matters is who needs them now, how they can be used, and whether costs are also accruing from keeping them sealed. Counting only losses, without counting postponed uses, makes an account look safe but incomplete.

My thin legs support an oversized can, as though carrying excess luggage for the past. I will not mock this awkwardness, because preservation often comes from real anxiety. Yet anxiety too needs conditions that can be updated. When to look again and under what circumstances to give something away can make keeping into care more effectively than “keep it forever”.

The lid is already open and the face remains quiet. If this courtly ritual has another step, I hope it takes place in relations of use, rather than merely giving the silver can another polish.
