From photographs to a projectable image

This 2014 work appears alongside the Wu images in the same portfolio, but its medium is specified as “any material suitable for projection,” with dimensions determined by the exhibition. That specification allows the image to leave a fixed print format and enter another surface and scale.

Contact within the image

Green and blue-black gaps form channels between rounded orange-red clusters. The eye moves between coloured masses and their edges; contact can first be read as shapes approaching, crowding and separating. This tactile association arises from the visible image. The portfolio’s title and medium alone do not establish touch sensors or audience interaction. The source page also specifies neither a separate running time nor a particular installation.

A corresponding Photoshop working file

The retained Photoshop file quan.psb contains a 23,622 × 23,622-pixel image. A sampled preview of its composite image corresponds to the arrangement of colour clusters and channels in Touch touching on page 21 of He Fa Portfolio (PDF). The file’s fixed pixel dimensions and the work’s stated variable projection dimensions are recorded separately. The sampled correspondence does not establish the complete layer contents or final-output status, nor does this file alone demonstrate animation or a realized exhibition.

A surface appears; a body is seen

    Touch touchingIllusion

Touch touching retains a medium specification of projection-suitable surfaces; Illusion presents bodies against white in light boxes. Both make images visible through light, but their titles establish neither touch interaction nor a continuous movement sequence.

Touch touching assigns images to projection-suitable materials; Lisa’s Paper Screening brings drawings into spoken accounts. Both use supporting surfaces, but projection and participants’ own making are not interchangeable.
