Project statement

Gewu Studio was founded in 2012. As a co-founding member, He Fa mainly worked on the market side and also contributed to design discussions. Photography, product design, 3D printing and communication unfolded in the same studio.

Twelve Water Lamps was Song Bowen’s 2012 graduation project at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Referring to Ma Yuan’s Twelve Views of Water, it used parametric modelling and 3D printing to turn water patterns into lighting forms, and was exhibited at Beijing’s LiangDian Design Center from December 2012 to January 2013.

PROJECT NOTES

In 2012, Gewu Studio brought photography, design, 3D printing and product communication onto the same worktable.

He Fa participated in co-founding Gewu Studio, working on the market side and contributing to design discussions. During the same period, Song Bowen completed Twelve Water Lamps, translating water patterns from Ma Yuan’s Twelve Views of Water into 3D-printed lighting forms.

01 / Studio

Beginning with a shared studio

Gewu brought people from different disciplines into one working space. He Fa mainly handled market and communication work while bringing a photographer’s perspective into daily discussions.

02 / Work

Twelve Water Lamps by Song Bowen

Song Bowen developed the work through a study of Ma Yuan’s Twelve Views of Water. Twelve water patterns were modelled into lighting forms with different folds, relief and ways of transmitting light.

03 / Making

Water patterns enter 3D printing

Digital models turn two-dimensional water patterns into continuous surfaces. 3D printing retains the fine layered texture and allows light to pass from within the form.
