How Does a Hole Become a Theatre? →

From a pinhole camera, collage and portraiture to language, shared rehearsals and film. Six chapters that also question the story they make of this path.

How a work was first proposed, and how it is read later.

Project accounts sit alongside longer retrospectives and subsequent research. Dates and text types distinguish writing made during a project from later interpretations. Original Chinese texts are marked below.

SIX READING ROUTES

Begin with a question

Begin with a concrete question, and move between questions as you read. Six entries connect project accounts, participant writings, public debates and later theoretical research. Each entry preserves the original byline and date and identifies the available language editions.

01Who can speak after the recording?Whose experience does a camera preserve? These writings move from the naming, encounters and disclosure agreements of Shi Xiang to the filming proposal for Human Surrender and a close reading written in 2026. They ask how recording changes a relationship and what a later viewer can still answer.10 texts

Start here

  1. Project account and retrospective on earlier work

    What Is Shixiang? ↗

Begin with the 2020 account of photography becoming an encounter between two people. Naming, collaboration and choices about disclosure appear together.

  2. Filming invitation and proposal

A Recruitment Text for Human Surrender ↗

Then read the three filming arrangements proposed in the 2023 recruitment text, where roles, recorded daily life and a public performance enter one another.

  3. Later study of the work

Imaging with You: The Unowned Second Person and Non-Sovereign Spectatorship in Human Surrender / Shoot Self with You ↗

Finish with the 2026 close reading, which asks why moving a camera closer to someone does not give it the authority to answer for them.

02Starting from a story of your ownHow does someone arriving at a theatre become the person who starts something? Long interviews, personal writing, shared authorship and rehearsals lead into one another here. 2. Jointly credited invitation and initiator’s account

Open Call: Becoming Wind, Breaking Waves Sets Sail in February ↗

Continue with the jointly credited text by Lifeng and He Fa. Lifeng’s contribution preserves the initiator’s own voice and uncertainty.

  3. Pre-performance account of an initiative

Follow Xu Shuai from participating in the film to initiating Breaking Moon, and see one project opening into another rehearsal.

03Making together: who decides?Who gains the power to decide by providing a venue, setting a date, organizing labour, recording or publishing? Begin with He Fa’s reflections on conflict, continue through the 3P witnessing proposal, and reach debates about authority and public speech. The wish to create together meets its test in actual roles and disagreements.8 texts

Start here

  1. Organizational reflection during production

A Future That Seems Both True and False ↗

Begin with this 2021 organizational reflection, where temporary teams, support for daily living, personal decisions and apologies sit within the same account.

  2. Invitation and proposal for documenters

3P Open Call: Witnessing and Recording the Eighth P4U Project, Kill the Rose ↗

Next, examine how the 3P proposal sets out witnessing, publication during the process and discussion of ownership. The observer becomes part of the event.

04How rules become actionHow do a fictional crisis, a voting procedure or the deadline of a single performance produce choices? Period invitations preserve rules as they were proposed. The 2025 AGT research attempts a grammar of action while questioning what its codes leave out. Moving between these dates makes the distance between a proposal and its later interpretation visible.12 texts

Start here

  1. Period project account and invitation

Draw Your Own Line of Flight in Battle Royale ↗

Enter through this 2021 text on games and recruitment: fictional organizations, voting and a boxing ring turn choices into conditions of participation.

  2. Account of a participatory project

Then follow how The Final Solution proposes a fictional crisis and connects speech in its meetings with written records and further discussion.

  3. Later theoretical framework

Finish with the first part of AGT, written in 2025, where the author looks back on practice and proposes a model of conception, formulation, execution and reception.

05The spectator’s position, the body’s responseHow do a cough, a pause or a tired body change relations across a performance? Concrete rehearsal experiences sit alongside 2025 research into performance events, the gaze, speech and the analytic third. These accounts place different emphases on live feedback, the structure of viewing and experiences formed in a relationship; they also disagree.8 texts

Start here

  1. Pre-performance rehearsal account

Sixteen Days and Nights at P4: The Cocoon Performance ↗

Begin with the sixteen days before Cocoon: schedules, working roles, fatigue and a slippery stage bring bodies into view before theory.

Next, read the 2025 book study for its account of responses passing between performers and spectators, with sound and space entering the exchange.

  3. Theoretical study

The Enthroned Gaze: A Lacanian Restructuring of Theatrical Theory in François Regnault’s Le Spectateur ↗

Finish with The Enthroned Gaze, paying particular attention to its questions about historical differences, bodily experience and the limits of a closed theoretical system.
